Sandra Channings
- Sign language teacher
My name is Sandra Channings. I am the Director of the Communication Community, which is dedicated to teaching British Sign Language (BSL) Levels 1-6, raising Deaf Awareness, and ensuring that individuals are equipped to communicate effectively with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
Born Deaf (my preferred language is BSL), I have ‘lived experience’ and can teach not only the linguistics and grammar of BSL but also the culture and history associated with the Deaf community.
I have over 30 years of teaching experience.I teach individuals and groups of all ages who are keen to learn for their interests and self-development, as well as those in the workplace who are keen to offer a more accessible service for D/deaf individuals.
To date, organisations I have worked with include Professional Organisations/Goods and Service Providers such as the Police Force; Universities and Medical Undergraduates; the wider NHS, both clinical and non-clinical staff; Media; Care Homes; Veterinary Practices, Pharmacies, Opticians, Supermarkets, Trades People, Schools and Colleges.
Online classes have become increasingly popular, offering more flexibility for learners happy to study in the comfort of their own environment. My online classes via Zoom will always include a maximum of four students at any one time, as numbers any greater than this hinder both the learning and teaching experience.
Where there are larger groups, I am happier teaching face-to-face.
I also run face-to-face workshops for Level 6 learners, which are an opportunity to collect, collate, and record evidence required for assessments.
All courses are delivered in a relaxed and friendly way, which is the best way to learn!
